Visit the Samui Elephant Experience
One activity often at the top of tourists’ bucket lists is visiting the incredible Asian elephants. On Koh Samui, there are three elephant sanctuaries owned and operated by two different companies. We at Road Affair only support ethical sanctuaries and are happy to report, along with the organization Responsible Travel, that Samui Elephant Experience treats its elephants ethically. Samui Elephant Experience operates two locations on the island, one in Bophut and another in Chaweng Noi. The organization was founded by a local Thai man who witnessed the abuse and death of elephants due to overworking and unethical tourism practices. All the elephants in their sanctuaries are female and have been rescued from unethical sanctuaries and circuses.
Visitors begin their half-day tour with a safety and information video about how to interact with elephants in the most ethical way. Afterward, they learn how to make healthy elephant snacks in a mini “cooking class.” Once the treats are prepared, a guide leads guests through the sanctuary. The elephants are not forced to bathe or eat, and visitors are not allowed to ride, bathe, or touch them—only to feed and admire them. Guides also share stories about the elephants, their quirks, and how they arrived at the sanctuary. At the end of the tour, a massive all-you-can-eat buffet is served, allowing visitors to feast while enjoying a breathtaking view of the jungle and the gentle giants.
While we cannot personally vouch for the ethical standards of the other sanctuaries on the island, research and non-profit organizations have not recognized them as ethical tourist businesses. We urge you to keep this in mind when choosing a sanctuary. Remember, the most ethical places do not allow riding, bathing, force-feeding, or excessive touching. This is for your safety and, most importantly, for the well-being of these majestic creatures.
Hit Up the Night Markets
Night markets in Thailand are a must-see for tourists, and Samui’s night markets are no exception! Across the island, several night markets offer delicious street food, trinkets, and souvenirs. Strolling through a night market is a great way to spend an evening, as there’s lots to see and try. One of the best night markets is Fisherman’s Village Night Market, located in the lively Bophut area. Other excellent options include the Central Festival Market near the popular Central Festival Mall and Chaweng Lake Night Market, both of which are great for visitors staying near Chaweng Beach. For those in the west of the island, Nathon Night Market is a relaxed spot with a great selection of food. Additional notable markets include Chaweng Food Village and Lamai Night Market, located in the southeast of the island.
Night markets in Thailand don’t typically run every day, so be sure to check their schedules before heading out to avoid disappointment.
Explore the Temples
Thai temples are absolutely stunning and well worth visiting. On Samui, several unique and wonderful temples await exploration, including one that features the remains of a self-mummified monk wearing sunglasses!
Wat Phra Yai, also known as the Big Buddha Temple, is one of the most popular attractions. The temple sits on a small island overlooking the bay, featuring a massive golden Buddha at its center. Visitors can leave a donation, receive a blessing from a monk, climb to the top for a scenic view, and admire the intricate temple details. Wat Plai Laem, just a 10-minute walk away, is another must-see. This temple complex features statues and shrines built over a small lake filled with catfish, which visitors can feed.
In the southern part of Samui, two other temples are worth a visit: Wat Kunaram and Wat Ratchathammaram, also known as the Red Temple. Wat Kunaram is a simple temple, but its unique draw is the self-mummified monk, who sits on display wearing sunglasses. The performances are so popular that it’s common to see lines forming up to an hour before the show starts. In fact, we saw guests being turned away as early as 30 minutes before the 7 p.m. show due to full capacity.
To secure a spot, arrive early! The show lasts between 45 and 60 minutes, and you can indulge in delicious snacks and cocktails before and during the performance.
Shop at Central Festival Samui
If you’re looking for some retail therapy on Samui, head to the island’s top shopping mall, Central Festival Samui. This massive complex is home to over 200 stores, including well-known brands such as Chanel, Garmin, UNIQLO, and Samsung. Central Festival Samui also features a 6-D theater, Major Cineplex Central Samui, Pirates of the Mario Land game center, and a spacious outdoor balcony spread across two floors.
Located in Chaweng, the mall is open daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., making it the perfect place for shopping, dining, and entertainment all in one spot.
Visit Tamarind Springs Forest Spa
If you’re looking for a relaxing experience among the many tourist attractions in Koh Samui, a trip to Tamarind Springs Forest Spa might be just what the doctor ordered. Tamarind Springs is one of the most unique day spas in Thailand, nestled in a lush rainforest beside fresh springs in the south of the island. Regardless of their backstory, these pigs are now living their best life, spending their days lounging on pristine white-sand beaches and swimming in crystal-clear waters. Chase Waterfalls

To race on the adult track, participants must be at least 15 years old, as the karts and the track itself are quite fast. Be sure to wear closed-toe shoes, as they are required to ride! For those looking for something different to do in Koh Samui, a visit to Tarnim Magic Garden, also known as the Secret Buddha Garden, is a great choice.
