Why forming good trading habits is more important than finding the perfect setup

One of the most common mistakes new traders make is focusing too much on finding the next winning trade instead of becoming a good trader.

It is not uncommon to see beginners who spend most of their time on fundamental or technical analysis to find a profitable trading pattern. Some even immediately copy the ideas and systems of other traders without studying their rationale.

They are so afraid of missing out on a good opportunity that they would rather spend their trading time closing deals than identifying their strengths and weaknesses and working on their skills.

What they don’t understand is what it is winning trading habits that win trades more often than winning setups.

I’m not saying that finding or even copying trades doesn’t help.

My point is that self-improvement activities like keeping a trading journal or deliberate practice will make you a consistently profitable trader faster than simply hunting for good trading setups.

A successful boxer did not begin his career by participating in as many bouts as possible in the hope that the experience would make him a better athlete.

At first, he would spend hours and hours in the gym conditioning his body, memorizing different combinations and correcting his weaknesses before officially entering the ring. Then, armed with the basics and a habit of learning from his fights, he made the appropriate adjustments until he was undefeated in his weight class.

Now imagine that a boxer was more concerned with winning fights than being a good athlete. He challenged as many opponents as possible without thinking about his training.

His conditioning will likely fall apart in the ring and he will end up losing fights. Ironically, his desire to win affected his ability to win.

The fact is that many are so focused on their balance sheet and “scoring” good deals that they neglect their conditioning.

They don’t put much effort into improving their skills, and over time, their trading skills will be limited to the settings they normally take.

Focusing on process rather than profits makes you more prepared for any trading scenario that comes your way. It can also reduce anxiety when trading, as you are more in control of your current problems than future gains or losses.

At the end of the day, you have to remember that winning isn’t about having the best cards, it’s about how you play the ones you’re dealt.

Focus on becoming a good trader and good trades will follow.
