By the first birthday of my daughter, she traveled with me and her husband for three family weddings and one funeral. And at every flight of the plane to these events, she was at one of our circles. We were young (ISH) and did not quite wash the money, so we certainly did not even consider the opportunity to buy a place for her. After all, isn’t one of the benefits of flight with a child up to two years old?
But 17 years later, many flights later (and a few weeks of major incidents on air travel such as Delta Air Lines Crath in Toronto), I reflect on whether everything should be done differently. Children under the age of two are allowed to travel as children within the federal aviation administration, but the agency itself says: “The safest place for your child under the age of two on the American plane is located [an] Approved children’s content system (CRS) or your device. “The 2019 National Institute of Health Studies showed that unrestrained lap children are prone to flight injuries.

Is it safe to fly with a baby or small on your knees?
“The way I look at it is quite simple,” says Anthony Brikhaus, Associate Professor at Aviation College at Embry-Riddle. “Parents should fasten their children in the car seat, which goes to the airport when they are below a certain age or a certain weight, but they can still walk on board the aircraft with the same child and hold this baby in circles. If a flight is futile, then it is not a problem. If this child is not tied, it will be a problem. “
“Physics tells us that the object in motion wants to remain in motion until it does not work,” Brikhaus explains. “Security belts contain you on the spot. If the passenger is not tied and something happens, this passenger will fly until something stops this movement.”
The National Transport Security Council recommends that FAA change its knees for many years, but the changes have not yet been made. “When NTSB gives a recommendation, it looks at the safety and saving of life. When FAA looks at the recommendation, they look at these things as well as they also look at the financial consequences,” Brickhouse adds.

What do parents talk about children in circles?
“I’m just on a child’s team when it comes to air travel,” says Christina Sarkis, the editor-in-chief and co-founder of the family manufacturer and Tourscoop and the two mom. “Yes, this is an extra cost, but it’s a child. Turgulence is not a joke, and the last thing I wanted as a new father is to find myself in a situation where my child suffered because I tried to save money.”
“It is also practical: the location of the car seat in the flat seat of the child meant that they had a familiar place for sleep and get -togethers during the flight,” she continues. “And get out of the plane with a vacation, it meant that the vacation went on the right leg.”

But Dr. Ben Hoffman, president of the American Academy of Pediatrics in 2024, realizes that the choice may not be so clear for some parents. “Either parents can do the safest or they can do what they can afford. As a pediatrician practicing, I talk to the family of families who would like to get a place for their six -month, but they can’t afford to do it. It makes parents make a tough choice – it’s what paternity.”
Hoffman notes that, despite the fact that Toronto accidents attracted attention, such incidents as it rarely. An unexpected, heavy turbulence is the biggest threat to children. “In these circumstances, the force is so great, nor the parents, even the superman, will be able to keep the child. This is a real risk about children on their knees.”
Children’s restraint systems may be additional costs
If you decide to buy a separate place for your young age, you will also need a child detention system approved by FAA. Many car chairs meet this requirement, and you most likely bring it to the trip for use. Just check the owner’s guide or seat sticker to make sure it is certified for use in the plane.
Hoffman says there is a benefit to the use of a car stool even after the second birthday of the baby. “The cland belt contacts the body on a very small surface area, slightly above the pelvis, hips and upper legs. When what happens, the whole force is directed where it touches the human body. A car stool with a five -point harness has a much wider surface area, so it is more effective.

The AMSAFE Baby Aviation (Cares) device is also certified for children up to 40 inches and weighs from 22 to 44 pounds. But parents should note that it should attach around the circle of the plane seat, so it affects the use of the table for the person behind the child. Dr. Hoffman saw passengers refusing to be inconvenient. “This is a perfectly great option, but sometimes his practicality is complicated,” he says.

Dr. Hoffman did not bought places for their own children when they were less than two of the affordability factors. “It was just a matter of the economy,” he says. “I knew the risk and we did our best with what they had.”

“It is important for each parent to evaluate the circumstances and know how they are at risk,” he continues. “It is important to know what options are, and to make the best reasonable solution for them and their child. There is always such tension between what is the safest and realistic and much to the economy. So, you are doing your best with what you have, and it is not guilty of your parents and not ashamed.”
Good news is that the flight remains a safe journey. “Statistically speaking, aviation is the safest way to transport there,” Brikhaus notes. “It was, and it remains, even in the light of the tragedies and accidents that have been recently.”
“A person is much more likely to get injured in the car on the way to the airport, then they are on the plane,” Hoffman says. “But very few people were horrified when they get into the car, and many people were horrified when they were flying.”
